People are sometimes amazed to hear that expert hypnotherapists can often get rid of a problem completely in just one session. So how many people would believe that we can sometimes make it TWO problems?
Normally if someone wants to stop smoking, and they also have an anxiety issue, I would expect to be doing a separate hypnosis session for each issue, of course. But occasionally an opportunity presents itself to kill two birds with one stone, and Heather was a case in point. She presented with anxiety, but just happened to mention that she also smoked, although she wasn't a heavy smoker. So I asked her a few quick questions:
Do you like smoking?
"No, I hate it."
Do you feel as if smoking helps you, for example with your anxiety?
"Not at all! I actually think it makes me feel worse sometimes."
Do you have any worries about stopping smoking?
"No, I'd love to stop smoking!"
BINGO! So we did the hypnotherapy on anxiety, and along the way I just pointed out to the Subconscious mind that the nicotine in the cigarettes actually increases heart rate and blood pressure, so they certainly don't have a calming effect... can we shut down the cravings for that as well as calm down the anxiety?
This was the feedback on that session:
Hi Chris, it's Heather, I came to see you a week last Monday, for anxiety, it's just to let you know that I feel absolutely fantastic, and I've not had a cigarette since I came to see you, so... you said to let you know how I got on, I'm doing brilliant, thank you! I might see you again at some time in the future, but for now I'm doing brilliant, so... bye!
So why can't we do that every time? Because of the beliefs and ideas that support the smoking habit in many clients. You might imagine that all I have to do is 'hypnotise' a smoker, tell them to stop smoking and they will just go ahead and do that, right?
Wrong! People in trance states don't simply obey instructions, the Subconscious mind holds beliefs and ideas about smoking. Some smokers genuinely believe it calms them down, or that it is a pleasure, or maybe they fear that they will gain weight if they stop smoking. Convincing them otherwise is what usually takes up the time, I usually have to argue a case for change but Heather didn't need convincing so I reckoned it was worth a shot to just throw that in as well, and it worked! more about this
