"Hello, it's Jill here, I came to see you in July about my fear of having my blood pressure taken and going to hospitals... well it seems to have worked, I can take my own blood pressure now without any problems, and it has come down even though I am on some tablets, and I just feel a lot more comfortable so thank you very much!"
Jill had a case of 'White Coat Syndrome', an anxiety reaction that kicks in when doctors or medical persons are around, and often specifically linked to having blood pressure tests - which of course puts blood pressure up higher than it normally would be, giving a misleadingly high reading. This can lead to medication being prescribed for 'high' blood pressure, when there might be no need.
Simply telling the patient to relax, or reassuring them as many medics attempt to do, won't make much difference because it is the Subconscious mind triggering the reaction, and the only people who know how to get information through to the Subconscious mind are hypnotherapists.
Of course, there can be other causes of raised blood pressure, so I used hypnosis to explain to Jill's Subconscious mind that the doctor needs to get an accurate reading of blood pressure, and the trouble with creating a fear reaction is that heart-rate is accelerated and blood pressure is therefore not being taken 'at rest', which is the reading they're after, so can we create a sense of calm and relaxation please, whenever Jill is around medical equipment, doctors and hospitals etc.? (That's a summary, I actually spent about 45 minutes addressing the Subconscious mind!)
Just one hypnotherapy session, and it's done. Now Jill can even take her own blood pressure! more about this
