"Thank you for seeing me, it's the best thing I've done."
That was how L. summed up her hypnotherapy session to address her insomnia and sleep-related anxiety. Contrary to common assumptions there is no sleep in hypnosis, but sleep cycles are controlled by the Subconscious mind, which switches the conscious mind on and off. Hypnotherapy is a way of getting detailed information to the Subconscious mind about how to improve sleep cycles.
This was the situation before the session:
"Hi, I'm wondering if you can help to solve anxiety surrounding sleep? I'm suffering with insomnia. It's been going on for three years. I stress myself out that if I don't get sleep I won't be fit for next day, and of course I then struggle and I'm drained in work. I also can't stick my husband's snoring, he doesn't always snore but even if he breathes loudly I can't go over, so I'm running on empty at the moment."
The Subconscious mind doesn't sleep at all, doesn't need to. Only the conscious mind needs down time, and the Subconscious is responsible for switching it off and on according to a pattern, but if that pattern is interrupted, and the Subconscious loses the thread, it can become confused as to when sleep should be triggered, and the various types of insomnia can easily result.
After just one hypnotherapy session, this was the feedback:
"After seeing you I felt very, very relaxed - more relaxed than I think I have ever been - and my daughter could see it straight away. That night I slept and although I woke to use the bathroom I fell straight back to sleep and had numerous different dreams. I was aware of his snoring and I told him to stop but I did turn over and go to sleep... I will at some point book with you again as I want to make sure I never go back to the hell I was in..."
