Most of the trouble booze causes is actually caused by drinking too quickly, or an excess of alcohol. With this thought in mind, S.H. didn't want to stop drinking altogether but just to slow down the pace of consumption and cut back on the amount she was drinking overall. Now, if you tried to do that with willpower it wouldn't work because willpower is a conscious effort to impose a new conscious decision, and once any alcohol is in the system, willpower dissolves, as we all know!
A hypnotherapy session presents a case for change to the Subconscious mind, and the Subconscious mind controls all of your behaviours and reactions whilst alcohol is in the system. Drinking drops you into trance, just like smoking cannabis does and various other intoxicants. Drink or drug induced trance is a mental state in which the Subconscious mind is in the driving seat, directing all operations and the conscious rational mind is either asleep on the back seat or away with the fairies. This often leads to irrational decisions, like opening another bottle when you've got work in the morning.
I like to have fun with this one, and suggest to the Subconscious mind that it is missing out on some of the pleasures of drinking because if you knock back a glass of wine you're not savouring it, so we should be more like the connoisseur, and really slow down the pace... I spend quite some time selling this new way of drinking to the sensory, emotional Subconscious because the idea is to arrive at a win-win solution, where the client is getting more pleasure out of drinking but at the same time, consuming less. more about this
One session later we have this feedback:
"Hi Chris,
Just thought I'd drop you a line to let you know how I'm doing after my hypnotherapy with you, I thought I'd give it a couple of weeks to see how I got on. So far so good, I have been able to reduce my drinking dramatically, I can barely finish 2 glasses of wine without falling asleep! I don't feel the need to gulp wine, nor do I need to drink loads, I can seem to make 2 glasses last hours.
I'm so pleased about this. I feel like a new person. I feel well for a change. Thank you. S.H."
