"Hi Chris, just thought I'd text to say thanks, it's been almost a month without cigarettes!!
"When I left your office I had no desire to smoke, still don't and never want to start again, so thanks again!" Anna 4/10/21
Smoking isn't natural, is it? When we first try smoking tobacco - when we first attempt to inhale the fumes - the impression it makes is not at all pleasant! Most people cough, and find it difficult to breathe it in, and even when they do manage to inhale it properly, the usual result is nausea and dizziness.
This is because tobaco smoke is unpleasant and so is the effect of inhaling it. But if you repeat any sensation over and over again, whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, it ceases to register after a while. You 'get used to it', and stop noticing how unpleasant it actually is.
A voluntary behaviour becomes a habit because of the way the human brain works: at first it is under your conscious control: you can take it or leave it. For some people it stays that way because they don't fall into a predictable pattern, and we call them 'social smokers'. We all started out doing that. But our lives are organised into routines, so it's hardly surprising if smoking also falls into a routine. The Subconscious mind then spots the pattern and takes over the running of the behaviour for you, so that you no longer have to think about it consciously. It becomes a Compulsive Habit.
Now, we don't like the idea that we can't help doing something: we much prefer to tell ourselves that we're doing it on purpose, either because we like it, or because it serves some sort of imaginary purpose; so many smokers will adopt the idea that they are smoking out of choice or preference, or for 'pleasure', even though there was no pleasure in it really from the start!
All I do in a typical hypnosis session is get the attention of the Subconscious mind and point out these facts, along with a request to shut the old habit down - and the cravings too - and it does! I also ask the Subconscious mind not to replace the old smoking habit with anything else, so the client doesn't start eating instead and gain weight. Weight gain is easily avoided with expert hypnotherapy. more about this
